Abandoned Wind Farm near Turkey, Texas

Looks like this place has seen a lot of wind...
About 4 miles southeast of Turkey, Texas on FM 656 something unusual can be seen amongst the rolling cotton fields and grazing cattle.  An abandoned wind farm sits close to the road and has been left to the elements.

I happened by this unusual sight in the late summer of 2014.  There was only a slight breeze that day, but it was enough to turn the blades on this strange wind capturing structure.  It was super creepy to hear the bangs, creaks and clangs as all the blades simultaneously turned slowly in the wind.  I would be some kind of awesome to see this thing on a really windy day!

There were many blades that had become unattached lying in the tall grass and weeds near the base of the structure.  I would assume that it is probably not uncommon for some of the parts of the structure to find their way into the roadway now and then.

I can't imagine how much it cost to build something like this.  It appears to stretch along the road for about a third of a mile.  I've never seen a similar wind turbine design anywhere else.  It was apparently not a successful enterprise or else it wouldn't have been left to its own devices.  I would love to find out the whole story sometime.

More pictures for your viewing please below and please be sure to leave any comments you have about this unusual structure.

What appears to be the skeleton of an old cotton gin peeks out behind the wind "structure"
